Information Security and Forensics Track

The Faculty of Computer Studies (FCS) at Arab Open University (AOU) welcomes you to our Postgraduate Programme of MSc in Computing - Information Security and Forensics. The MSc in Computing programme has been developed in collaboration with our partner institution, the Open University UK (OU UK). It is a validated programme of study and it was first validated by the OU UK in the year 2009 and then in 2012. This programme was introduced to provide opportunities to graduates in the Arab World to pursue graduate studies in the fields of Information Security and Forensics. .

The need for information security and forensics analysts in the Arab countries is continuously increasing, and thus the career outlook for graduates looks positive, as there is a shortage of skilled personnel in both the Information Security and digital forensics fields. In addition, the rapidly increasing number of users connected to the internet in the Arab region leads to increasing the percentage of internet-related (or internet–dependent) businesses. The role of information security analysts is thus crucial for this growing business sector.
Students on the MSc in Computing – Information Security and Forensics pathway will develop a wide range of skills and competencies related to information security, digital forensics and network security that will prepare you for a variety of career opportunities. Graduates can progress to work in cyber-fighting agencies (whether local, regional and international). But the career opportunity is not limited to those agencies with the huge demand in industry for professionals with both digital forensics and information security skills especially with the rise of cyber-security threats and attacks.

Software Development Track

The continuously increasing complexity of software systems used by e-governments, commerce and industry underlines the need for highly skilled software developers. Currently, there are insufficient skilled software developers in the Arab World. Most of the Computing and IT departments in the universities of the region provide computer science and information systems programmes. Existing computing programmes in regional universities do not allocate enough time to cover the material that a software professional needs to know. Privatization of education in the Arab world and the increasing need for qualified teaching assistants in the field of software development is also increasing.
Students on the MSc in Computing pathway will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills related to topics such as: Specification of requirements and design, software design, implementation and evaluation of software, design and implementation of reusable software components, quantitative analysis and design of computing systems, software engineering issues and project management concepts.

Objectives

The MSc in Computing is an intensive programme of study designed specifically for graduates of computing and related disciplines. The qualification enables you to develop your knowledge and skills in computing and to promote a professional attitude to the application of those skills
The qualification will:

  • Give you the knowledge and skills necessary to become an effective professional in the computing industry.
  • Provide you with selected specialized areas of study so that you can experience and develop the frontiers of practice and research in focused aspects of computing and its application.
  • Encourage you, through the provision of appropriate educational activities, to develop study and transferable skills applicable to your employment and your continuing professional development.
  • Enable you to develop a deeper understanding of a specialist area of information security and forensics (ISF).
  • Enable you to contribute to future developments in the field of information security and forensics.
  • Provide the opportunity for you to develop and apply research skills, focused on a substantial practical project in ISF.

To gain an MSc in Computing, the student has to complete 48 credits distributed as follows:

  • 24 credits of compulsory courses
  • 8 credits of courses
  • 16 credits project and research dissertation

Progression and Graduation

  • To pass a course, a student must achieve the following:
    • The minimum passing score on each part of the assessment components (the continuous assessment and the exam)
    • The minimum passing grade in a course is 70/100
  • To achieve the MSc programme award, a student must successfully complete all the compulsory modules and appropriate optional modules as indicated in the programme description with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and within a period of no more than five years
