The Faculty of Language Studies (FLS) was established in 2002, at the very start of the Arab Open University (AOU). The College, as part of the AOU, is affiliated with the OU-UK, which validates, accredits, and assesses FLS programmes. At present, it offers a BA Programme (Hons) in English Language and Literature (ELL) and a BA Programme (Hons) in English Language and Literature with Translation track (ELLT). It also offers an MA in TEFL programme.

1) BA Programmes
BA Programmme (Hons) in English Language & Literature
While the first programme – English Language and Literature – is essentially made up of courses within the traditional, interrelated realms of language, literature and linguistics, it does venture also into the spheres of discourse analysis, pragmatics and culture. Clearly, a BA programme in English Language and Literature enables graduates of the programme to be competent in the fields of linguistics and English Literature, two fields essential to any intellectual, well-rounded person's education. They are also essential to any society's needs, given that English literature has actually expanded over the years to include all literatures written in (or even translated into) English. Such crucial development comes with the aim of catering for students' global education and outlook – a must in today's world. In addition, a degree in language and literature also qualifies students for the workplace. Graduates of literature, linguistics and translation develop a command of the language that transcends their specific fields of study to include the language of journalism, media, the marketplace, politics, etc. After all, a programme in English Language and Literature graduates students in possession of excellent language communication skills, both oral and written.
BA Hons in English Language, Literature and Translation
“The Translation Track offered by the faculty of Language studies is designed to give students a focused, relevant and utilizable body of knowledge in the major principles and approaches to translation, in addition to application and practice. The programme equips students with knowledge about the skills involved in translation and the linguistic expertise needed to analyze language and produce the appropriate expressions in the source and target language. Graduates also enjoy an improved technical experience in the use of computer and electronic translation tools."
The knowledge and skills offered by the program provide students with vital assets to enable future employability and career success.
Translation track graduates have a broad range of job opportunities in the private and public sector employment using language flexibility, knowledge and expertise. Public functions within Ministries of Information, Foreign Affairs, Justice, the Parliament and Security Forces can be the destination for graduates of the programme. In addition, the services sector, tourism, banks, trade, industry, the information sector, press agencies, publishing houses, printed and electronic media, advertising, the education sector, schools, universities and teaching centers, as well as international companies and organizations
Duration of the programe:
The duration of the BA programe is six regular semesters and one summer (3.5 academic years).
The method of teaching in the BA programmes is face to face and blended learning.
The Awards leading to an OU Certificate:
- Certificate of Higher Education in English Language and Literature for students who have completed 120 credit points / 32 credit hours at level 1.
- Diploma of Higher Education in English Language and Literature for students who have completed 240 credit points / 64 credit hours at level 1 and 2.
- When completing all programe requirements, (480/503 points/ 129/131 credit hours) students are awarded a BA Honours in English Language and Literature ELL or ELLT – a dual degree: a Certificate from the AOU and a Certificate from the OU.
OU/AOU – MA
2) Master's Programmes
MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
The new MA in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is one of the very few Master degrees in teaching English, available in Lebanon.
It is the only MA in teaching English as a Foreign Language that is validated by the British Open University, supported by AGFUND and offered at competitive fee.
The duration of the programme is two years.
The MA in TEFL has two tracks: one with dissertation and one with a comprehensive exam.
Duration of the program:
The duration of the MA programs is 2 years, 4 semesters and can be extended to 3 years, 6 semesters.
Method of Teaching:
The method of teaching in the MA is full-time teaching / blended learning.
The Awards leading to an OU Certificate:
- When students complete (16 credit hours), they get a Postgraduate Certificate in their major (OU).
- When they complete 32 credit hours, they are awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in their major (OU).
- When they complete all program requirement, they are awarded an MA in their major – a dual degree: A Certificate from the AOU and a Certificate from the OU.
