In a powerful expression of environmental stewardship and civic responsibility, the Arab Open University - Lebanon continues its annual Green Graduation Initiative, this year planting 350 cedar trees in the Sannine–Mtein region in honor of its 16th graduating cohort. Held on Sunday, April 27, 2025, the event symbolized a living legacy of growth, sustainability, and national pride.
The initiative, held in collaboration with the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI), reflects AOU’s enduring commitment to sustainable development and its strategic vision to engage graduates in actions that extend beyond the classroom. By embedding ecological consciousness into a core milestone like graduation, the university underscores its belief in education as a tool not just for employment, but for empowerment and transformation.
As graduates arrived at the scenic Sannine site after a morning departure from the Beirut and Antelias Centers, they were welcomed with a warm breakfast and a detailed orientation. The planting began at 11:00 AM sharp, each student placing a cedar sapling into the Lebanese soil, symbolizing both the resilience of the nation’s identity and the enduring roots they’ve laid as part of the AOU community.
The cedar, Lebanon’s national emblem, was chosen not only for its ecological significance, but also for what it represents: strength, endurance, and regeneration. In planting trees, graduates are called to reflect on their role as future leaders in a world facing climate change, environmental degradation, and diminishing natural resources.
Following the planting, students embarked on a hike through the reforested terrain, embracing nature and the values of conservation. The day concluded with a communal lunch, generously supported by AOU’s Office of Alumni Relations.
Through this annual act of planting, AOU graduates begin a lifelong journey of responsibility to their communities, their environment, and their country.
