The Arab Open University – Lebanon celebrated a defining moment in the lives of its students and the history of the University as it honored its 21st cohort during its 17th Graduation Ceremony, held on August 6 at the Beirut Waterfront – Seaside Pavilion.
The landmark celebration brought together approximately 400 graduates, alongside their families, distinguished guests, members of the academic and administrative community, and representatives of the wider AOU family. It was an evening filled with pride, emotion, and celebration, marking the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance, hard work, and countless sleepless nights.
Addressing the graduates, Dr. Yara Abdallah, Rector of University, delivered a heartfelt message centered on hope, perseverance, and the enduring value of education. In her speech, she reflected on the vision behind the establishment of the Arab Open University and the belief that education is not merely a means of obtaining a degree, but a path toward building minds, expanding opportunities, and empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.
As the University continues its journey in Lebanon, approaching a quarter-century of presence and impact, Dr. Abdallah highlighted AOU’s continued commitment to providing quality education and standing alongside its students through changing circumstances. She spoke directly to the resilience of Lebanon and its people, noting that despite the difficult circumstances and repeated challenges faced by the country, education remains a source of stability and hope.
“You are not leaving today with a certificate alone,” the Rector’s message conveyed. “You carry with you a story, a will, and a decision to begin again.”
The ceremony was honored by the presence of a distinguished group of guests and public figures, most notably His Excellency Dr. Rakan Nasreddine, Minister of Public Health, who delivered the Commencement Address. In an inspiring message to the graduating class, Minister Nasreddine reflected on the importance of education, health, and the role of young people in shaping Lebanon’s future. His address carried a message of hope and responsibility, emphasizing that investing in knowledge and empowering young generations remain among the most important foundations for building a stronger and more resilient society.
At a time when Lebanon continues to face significant challenges, his message resonated strongly with the graduates, reminding them that their education is not simply a personal achievement, but also a source of responsibility toward their communities and the future of their country.
The graduation ceremony also featured a message to the graduating class from Prof. Mohammed Bin Ibrahim Al-Zakari, President of the Arab Open University, reaffirming the broader mission and vision of the University and the importance of preparing graduates who are equipped to contribute to the development of their societies.
The programme further included a musical interlude by singer Mrs. Carla Ramia, a speech by a representative of the graduating students, and from the Alumni Association, reinforcing the idea that graduation does not mark the end of the relationship between students and their University, but rather the beginning of a lifelong connection.
The most anticipated moment of the evening came with the awarding of degrees, as approximately 400 graduates crossed the stage to receive the recognition they had worked toward for years, years of lectures, assignments, examinations, challenges, personal sacrifices, and moments of uncertainty.
To the Class of 2026, your journey at AOU may have reached an important milestone, but your story is only beginning. You have join the growing community of AOU graduates who carry the University’s values and mission into workplaces, communities, institutions, and societies across Lebanon and beyond.
